Garceau Genealogy

The Family of Lador and Alma (Jacques) Garceau

This is my paternal grandfather's family, his brothers, sisters and parents. They came from St. Albans, Vermont and lived on the "other side of the tracks". In fact, they literally lived just on the other side of the tracks. My father remembers visiting them and spending the night (notice I didn't say sleeping) with his arms up on the window sill watching the trains go by only 20 yards from the window. My father says it wasn't much of a house. In any case, it was bought by a local oil company and brought to the ground. It is now a lovely piece of lawn.

Names that are UNDERLINED are links to a page with more info on that person.

From left to right, back row:

  • George Charles born Dec. 18, 1923 died April 28th, 2005. He was my grandfather and served in World War II with the 179th Infantry of the 45th Thunderbird Division. He was taken prisoner 3 times and escaped all three. Former Commander of the Vermont Chapter of the POW Association. He married my grandmother, Mary Acebo just before he left for Europe. He received the photo from his wedding while he was interred at Raines, Germany.

  • Marie Helen "Theresa" born Feb. 26, 1922

  • Blanche "Anna" born August 13, 1925 and married a Mossey, the only one of my grandfather's siblings that I know and a tremendous help in my genealogical research. Anna was named after one of her mother's sisters and doesn't care much for the name or the sister.

  • Rose Pearl born Feb. 15, 1927 died just two years ago as of this writing. She married a Tessier and is buried in the Mount Calvary Cemetery along with my great grandparents and my great uncle Adrien

  • Adrien Albert born June 19, 1920 also served in WWII but with the Vermont National Guards 43rd Division. He was killed overseas in the Phillipines on Apr. 11, 1945 and is buried in Mount Calvary.

  • front row:

  • Jean Luis born May 17, 1929.

  • Margaret Emma born Feb. 5, 1934

  • Lador Joseph born Sep. 10, 1895 died Mar. 18, 1969 was a tinsmith. He was also a fiddler of French Canadian tunes but his fiddle was broken up after he died when a family member thought that maybe some money was hidden in there. Lador was also a hunter with the help of his favorite dog, "King". He was the son of Alfred Garceau and Virginia Gamelin.

  • Harriet Marrie born Oct. 19, 1937, the one in the white dress in a row of her own. Besides Anna, I believe this is the last child still living. I believe she lives in Florida and nobody has really heard from her. My grandfather still had her graduation picture in a book when he passed away.

  • Cecile Alma born Jun. 21, 1930. I have just recently met one of her grandchildren, Shannon, who I guess is my 2nd cousin?

  • Alma (Jacques) born Feb. 7, 1901 died Mar. 5, 1975 and married Lador Jan. 6, 1918. Anna donated a picture of Alma to the St. Albans Historical Society museum. It features my great grandmother making a quilt and under the picture is the actual last quilt that she was working on before she died, still on the quilt making rack which was made for her by Lador's father Alfred for their wedding. I have a picture somewhere of my great grandmother holding me just after I was born.

  • Jeannie Edna born Jun. 27, 1932
