Shepherd Playing a Bagpipe,

First half of 14th C. by Gotlanders

"In Martebo church, on the Baltic island of Gotland, there is a stone-relief of a shepherd playing an archaic bagpipe, probably lacking drones [not really -ed.]. To the bag, a sheep's head is attached [carved -ed.] from which the chanter is seen protruding. The piper, together with another shepherd and an angel, portrays the biblical shepherds' vision. In Uppsala cathedral there is a contemporary relief of a minstrel playing a bagpipe with two parallel pipes(double chanter or chanter and drone?). Both of these portrayals are believed to have been executed during the first half of the 14th century by workmen from Gotland."
