Marie Renaud was born 1639 in St Marceau D'Orleans, Orleanais, France. She died 27 FEB 1708/09 in Bourg Royale, Charlesbourg, Quebec, Canada.
Marie Renaud's husband was Francois Leroux dit Cardinal (1637-1691). They were married 25 OCT 1668 in Quebec, Canada. They had one known child named Antoinette Leroux-Cardinal (1669-1739).
She was a Fille du roi -- a daughter of the king. Young women "recruited"
by the government of Louis XIV and provided with funds from the royal
treasury, clothing and in some cases dowries to come to New France in
the mid-1600s. In 1639 the population of Québec was approximately
139, and marriageable young women were needed to help colonize New
France. The women were mostly orphans, young widows, with a few from
the merchant and noble classes and of good repute. When the women
arrived in Québec they were placed with nuns, widows, or families. They
were expected to choose husbands from the men already in the colonies.
All descendants of the first French to come to Québec have at least one,
and sometimes many Filles du roi in their lineage.
