Aron Garceau Genealogy

The Newlywed Acebos from Barre, VT in 1916
Acebo Family

The picture to the left is of my Great Grandfather Fermin Acebo Casar and his wife Elvira Lastra Gomez. In Spain, the surname or father's name is the middle name (Acebo) where the last name (Casar) is the mother's surname. It also appear that in the case of Acebo, it's a place name rather than a family name (until the 20th century) as you had many people "from Acebo (del Acebo)" marrying each other.

My Grandmother, Mary Garceau (Acebo) didn't really know her father as he went over to Spain during the Spanish civil war. It is family lore that he was executed during this conflict in a lineup and is buried in Spain.

In order to make ends meet, my great-grandmother Elvira took to making bath-tub Grappa, a horrid type of alcohol which was of course illegal at the time and she was arrested and served two years in federal prison while the children were sent to foster homes in Swanton and Marshfield.

This is one of the more "colorful" sides of my family made even more colorful when I discovered 3 ship manifests from the Ellis Island website each containing the names of my great grandparents (Fermin came in 1910 and again in 1913 with his sister).

To view my entire family genealogy (the Acebos and Lastras who are not included here) visit my GEDCOM style website

Fermin came over on the S.S. La Touraine which left Havre, France on April 9, 1910. He was 16 years old and listed as a mason.

Fermin sits all the way to the right in this 1915 Barre Spanish Club picture

Elvira was naturalized in 1936, the same year her husband died

Seated is Sinforosa, the sister who moved to California and with whom Fermin travelled to the U.S. in 1913. Next to her I believe is her husband. Fermin is all the way to the right and I believe his brother Victoriano is on the left. The man in the middle may be another brother Aureo.

Fermin Acebo Acebo, my great great grandfather is seated in the middle. I believe that is Victoriano on the far right.

A young Fermin Acebo, ready to conquer the world.
When he went back to Spain before the Spanish Civil War he apparently did a little more than just fight.
In the 70's my grandmother travelled to Spain and met her "half" brother.
